Hexavalent Chromium Present In Regular Faucet Water From 31 U.S. Cities
A chemical identified as a carcinogen was found in regular faucet water samples from several United States cities. Hexavalent chromium was found in faucet water samples from thirty-one of 35 cities tested in an Environmental Working Group analyze released Monday. In the film “Erin Brockovich,” hexavalent chromium, or chromium-6, was the chemical that was the focus of the legal battle portrayed within the movie.
What is wrong with hexavalent chromium
Hexavalent chromium is dumped into the environment by steel and pulp mills, metal-plating and leather-tanning industries, based on the Environmental Working Group. Eroding soil causes this chemical to get into the water. And EWG paid labs to test 35 locations dirking water where the compound is identified to exist. A EWG scientist said evidence has been well-documented that a corollary exists between exposure to chromium-6 and stomach cancer in humans. The highest levels of hexavalent chromium were present in Norman, Okla., Honolulu, HI, Riverside, California, Madison, Wis., and San Jose, Calif.
The study into chromium-6
This is the 1st study of hexavalent chromium in water supplied to cities by the EWG. The analyze was made public as the Environmental Protection Agency considers a regulatory limit for chromium-6 in faucet water. The National Institutes of Health classified hexavalent chromium as a possible cause of cancer back in 2008. 0.06 parts per billion is the limit CA already put on hexavalent chromium back in 2009. There is over 200 times the allowed limit already in the water when the Environmental Working Group conducted their study. 25 of the 35 cities within the research were above the limit California considered safe.
Environmental Working Group advice: reverse osmosis water filter
You might remember Hexavalent chromium from the film “Erin Brockovich,” Brockovich, a real person, successfully sued Pacific Gas and Electric for contaminating the water supply of Hinckley, Calif., with chromium 6. Over $330 million in damages were paid by the electric company. Until the Environmental Protection Agency regulates hexavalent chromium in drinking water, the EWG suggests a water filter. "Reverse osmosis" water filtration systems are intended to remove heavy metals, including chromium, from drinking water. For a reverse osmosis water filtration you'll pay around $120 to $300.

Frequently Asked Questions...
I am looking for a good Water Filter. I have health issue & I need to drink filtered water. Any suggestion?
Looking for a good water filter that removes impurities from the tap water and makes better healthier drinking water. I am not happy with bottled water and some of the water filters that are available in the market. I drink well water and I heard well water may contain arsenic. So, I need a filter that removes common impurities, bacterias and arsenic. Any suggestions?
Answer:
I found a great water filter called “Jeevan® Water Filter” and its only $89.95. The Jeevan® Water Filter removes more impurities than all the leading brands. It removes: chlorine, lead, cysts, bacteria, viruses etc.., as well as, arsenic, a big concern for those with a well.
The filter cartridge also last 2-4 times longer than the leading brands, reducing the overall cost. The leading brands require changing the filter every 3-6 months but Jeevan® Water Filter recommends changing the filter only once a year, for a family of six (or up to 3500 gallons of water). Since, the Jeevan® Water Filter lasts so long, a glass (8 oz.) of pure water costs only 3 cents. The filter material is even environmentally friendly, the majority of the active filter medium is made from coconut shells, interesting.
So, if you are in the market for a great water filter (click on the link below), give it a chance and let me know what you think. --Diana
