What is in your water?
Everyone has second thoughts about their tap water these days. As a precaution, many of us don't necessarily drink from the tap any longer, but we still use tap water for everything from cooking to cleaning to brushing our teeth.
But what is in your water?
There are, of course, many naturally occurring minerals in tap water. Some— like copper or sodium— are relatively harmless. Others, however, like lead or uranium, can be more dangerous and lead to potentially fatal conditions. High doses of lead in municipal water supplies can lead to mood swings, chronic headaches, and nausea. Higher traces of magnesium and calcium in tap have been linked to a higher risk for heart disease in women. Uranium in drinking water can lead to toxicity in the kidneys and potential organ failure.
Another unseen threat to our water supply is agricultural run-off. Excessive amounts of waste from dairy farms, for example, can seep into the ground and contaminate local wells with bacteria and chemicals, leading to chronic diarrhea and other stomach-related illnesses. Fertilizers used in crop fields can attach to soil which then gets carried by rain water into natural water supplies. These chemicals leach oxygen from the water, killing most aquatic life. Natural nutrients used by farmers such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium that also flow into aquatic ecosystems can be even more dangerous— high levels of nitrate have been linked to Blue Baby Syndrome, for example, a potentially fatal disease in infants.
Pharmaceuticals have been cited in the municipal water system of 24 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. A wide range of drugs have been found, from OTC pain relievers like ibuprofen to heavy hitters like the mood stabilizers Prozac or the sex hormone estrone. The problem is so pervasive that traces have even been found in watersheds, the natural sources of municipal water supplies. The water companies say that the trace concentrations of the drugs are so small in scale that they can't affect us; however, many scientists say that long-term study is needed before we can know what consistent exposure to even the smallest traces can do to humans and wildlife.
Even elements that we are have grown accustomed and find innocuous, such as fluoride and chlorine, have recently come under fire. Fluoride, which was introduced into the U.S. water supply in the 1950s to slow tooth decay, has been linked to higher risks for everything from Alzheimer's to bone cancer in children. Chlorine, which is commonly used by water providers to "clean" water, might actually make the trace prescription drugs in the water more toxic.
So what options do you have? Keeping filters on your tap (even if you're not drinking the tap water) is a good idea. A basic carbon filter can do some of the heavy lifting, but your best option is to use a carbon filter and a reverse osmosis filter. Don't think you're safe if you have well water on your property- a well supply can be just as bad if not worse than municipal tap water. If you use bottled water, double check the brand you're using- some companies will run tap water through distillation and simply repackage it in bottles. Distillation does not remove all contaminants in water and can leave some of the worst elements, like asbestos, behind.
