A Quick Look At What Diatomaceous Earth Is, And What It Can Do For You
Diatoms are tiny organisms that inhabit our planet by the millions. Although these organisms are small in stature, they're having a huge impact on society. Whenever they die, they leave behind a pair of symmetrical shells. Diatomaceous earth is formed when millions of these fossils are present. The person who discovered this substance around 1837 mistook it for limestone.
Individuals soon found uses for the substances since it was available in such large amounts. In 1866 Alfred Nobel used it in his production of safer dynamite, and Wilhelm Berkefeld, noticing that the substance had filtering capabilities, developed “filter candles” which were used successfully during a German cholera epidemic in 1892. However, people still hadn't begun to use diatomaceous earth for filtration purposes just yet.
Since the substance is very porous, it makes an excellent filtering medium. You can use diatomaceous earth to get rid of tiny particles that ordinary filter paper can't. It has widely been used for decontaminating water. In this application, it is often used to filter the water in fish tanks and also in swimming pools. It doesn't alter liquids in any way, so it's also commonly used to filter wine, sugar, honey, and syrup. Other people have found ways to make use of it in the manufacture of paper, soaps and detergents, paints, and ceramics.
Another point worth mentioning when discussing the value of diatomaceous earth filtration is the fact that this material is available in abundance as a naturally-occurring element in nature. In parts of the western United States, the material is at least 302 feet deep, and there are also sizable deposits in such places as Virginia, Denmark, and the Sahara Desert, to name a few. One of the best things about using diatomaceous earth is that you won't be causing any damage to the environment.
There are numerous other uses that have been found for DE. These include facial scrubs, metal cleaners, toothpastes, insecticides, and absorbents for toxic spills. We will probably find many more uses for diatomaceous earth as time goes on.Doc No.lkhjsdklsd-ssj
